Leeds made to pay for missed chances

Referee:

Leeds United produced a much improved performance but they were made to pay for a string of missed chances has Leicester City won the game in the closing minutes with the only goal of the game from David Nugent.

Brian McDermott was looking for a response from his players following two poor defeats at the hands of Rochdale and Sheffield Wednesday and he got that as Leeds created a number of good chances in the first half hour but poor finishing let them down.

Leading goalscorer Ross McCormack was the biggest culprit. He saw his header hit the post in the opening ten minutes before being denied by Kasper Schmeichel when in on goal. McCormack also saw an effort cleared off the line and another effort tipped around the post as Leeds laid siege to the Leicester goal.

Tom Lees also missed a gilt-edged chance when he headed over from point-blank range with Schmeichel out of the picture.

Jimmy Kebe and Luke Varney also had good chances but neither could find a way past a stubborn Leicester rear-guard.

Jamie Vardy had the visitors best chance in the first half when his effort crashed off the post and Anthony Knockaert fired over as Leeds goalkeeper Paddy Kenny was a spectator for long periods.

The second half was much scrappier with neither goalkeeper tested until Nugent scored the only goal of the game with just three minutes remaining.

Nugent tucked the ball past Kenny after a good passing move from Leicester.

The goal was hard to take for Leeds and McDermott who have now lost five games in a row.
