Leeds drop more points

Leeds play-off hopes took a blow as they dropped two more points with a 1-1 draw at Elland Road against relegation threatened Peterborough United.

In an open game, Peterborough went ahead on fifteen minutes through the dangerous Dwight Gayle before Sam Byram equalised for Leeds just before the hour but a point at this stage of the season does little for Leeds hopes of reaching the play-offs.

Michael Tonge had Leeds first effort on goal during the game, Olejnik getting down well to make the save.

Peterborough had their own early chance, Dwight Gayle seeing his strike rebound off the crossbar.

Gayle made no mistake minutes later when he fired the visitors ahead, giving Paddy Kenny no chance after beating Lee Peltier.

The visitors were by far the better side in the opening quarter and Lee Tomlin was the next to test Kenny.

After a frustrating opening twenty-five minutes, which also saw Leeds lose Tom Lees through injury, the whites started to come into the game and Stephen Warnock went close when he fired wide after a good ball from Luke Varney.

Jason Pearce then headed off target after good work from Ross McCormack.

Paul Green was next to have a chance for the home side but he shot straight at Olejnik.

Steve Morison fired wide in added on time at the end of the first half as the hosts tried in vain to find an equaliser before half time.

El Hadji Diouf replaced Morison at half time and he was involved immediately, his cross picking out McCormack, whose spectacular effort went wide. At the other end, the pace of Gayle continued to cause Leeds problems and he shot wide after beating Peltier.

After starting the second half well, Leeds equalised just before the hour when Sam Byram scored for the second time in three games when he finished a corner from Warnock.

Leeds were piling the pressure on the Peterborough goal following the equaliser and McCormack and Byram both went close.

Green then tested Olejnik but they were leaving gaps at the back and Tomlin and Gayle continued to cause Leeds problems.

Warnock could have been sent off for Leeds after bringing down Ferdinand but the referee showed just a yellow card.

Varney then had the ball in the net for Leeds but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Kenny had to make a great save to deny Gayle after a poor attempted clearance by Peltier.

Both sides continued to look for a winner, Tomlin saw his free kick go just over for the visitors and Varney and Austin both went close for Leeds.

Pearce almost won the game deep into stoppage time when he headed wide from close range for Leeds.

It was to prove the final chance as Leeds were held to a third draw in a row.
