Leeds hit for six on disastrous afternoon

Leeds were hit for six by Watford at Elland Road on a desperate afternoon for the side.

The whites finished the game with nine men as Jason Pearce was shown a straight red card in the final minutes of the first half and Rodolph Austin was stretchered off in the opening moments of the second half with Leeds having used their three substitutes.

David Norris hit the post in Leeds first meaningful attack after Watford had started the game the stronger.

Luke Varney also had a good chance for Leeds when El Hadji Diouf played the striker in on goal but Manuel Almunia denied the forward.

Watford went ahead close to the half hour when Matej Vydra found himself in behind the Leeds defence and he beat Paddy Kenny in the Leeds goal.

Leeds were being hit on the break and Almen Abdi came close to doubling the lead for the visitors when Kenny made a good save for Leeds.

Abdi once again went close for the visitors in the closing minutes of the half when he shot across goal.

Leeds plight was made worse on the stroke of half time when Jason Pearce was sent off by referee Trevor Kettle for a strong tackle on Vydra.

Neil Warnock made a double substitution at half time with Ryan Hall and Michael Brown coming on for Diouf and Aidy White.

Leeds afternoon was compounded in the opening minutes of the half when Rodolph Austin was stretchered off after an innocuous clash, leaving Leeds down to nine men for over forty minutes.

Watford doubled their lead just past the hour when Abdi picked his spot.

Mark Yeates made it three for the visitors on 75 minutes with a free kick but nine men Leeds pulled a goal back from the penalty spot through Michael Tonge with ten minutes remaining.

Watford made it 4-1 within a few minutes when Vydra scored his second of the afternoon.

As if the afternoon could not get much worse, Brown picked up his fifth yellow card of the season for Leeds in injury time and he will miss the trip to Millwall next week as well as Pearce through suspension.

Watford hit their fifth goal of the afternoon deep into stoppage time when Sean Murray beat Kenny with a fierce strike.

Fellow substitute Troy Deeney hit a sixth as Leeds were desperate for the final whistle to be blown.

8 shots on target and 6 goals wtf it doesn't matter we had 9 players a total disaster, I'll say this, relegation is looking quite possible on performances like that. Austin out for a long time is another nail in the coffin. Pathetic.

I think U set up far to attacking which left lots of space in behind for us.. Tge red card was right for a nasty foul.. Your manager took a chance on using all your subs by the start of the second.. Sometimes it works.. This time it didn't.. There's no chance you'll go down so don't worry.. You'll go on a good run soon enough.. We can hopfuly build on this result & start to push.. Vydra is a class forward.. Naybe close to the best in the league.. Thus could be the start of something special..

NW said he was going to go Gung-ho for the Watford game and you could see this at the start when he played 3 at the back. Going a goal behind was a disappointment, but Pelts almost stopped to wave the off side flag and lost momentum, all I can say is play to the whistle. NW plans went even more tits up when Peace went in hard on Vydra and got sent off causing him to have a reshuffle and bring on Lee's. NW used his last 2 subs at half time. Even at 0-1 down and down to 10 men I thought there was always a chance we could get a draw out of the game but unfortunately the Austin injury proper knacked us up. Hind sight is a wonderful thing but you cannot plan for a red card and broken legs unfortunately, if neither had happened then it wouldn't have been the same game, but it did happen and with 2 extra men on the pitch it was inevitable that we were going to get run ragged. I wouldn't read too much into this result Watford although it may have been nice for you to bang in a few goals against 9 men, I somehow don't think that you will be lucky enough to be in this situation again this season.
