Tonge Earns Leeds A Point

Michael Tonge grabbed a late leveller for Leeds in the Yorkshire derby at Hillsborough.

Sheffield Wednesday looked like they were going to end a barren run of one point from seven games after Jay Bothroyd had headed them into a first half lead but Tonge scored from the edge of the area to earn Leeds a point.

Chris O`Grady had the first chance of the evening for the home side but his glancing header was easy for Paddy Kenny in the Leeds goal.

Kenny was then nearly embarrassed when he fumbled a long-range shot from Bothroyd. His blushes were spared when the ball came back off the crossbar.

The chance lifted the home side and Michail Antonio missed a great chance when he headed over from close range when unmarked.

Leeds only real chance of the first half fell to Michael Tonge when Chris Kirkland in the Wednesday goal pushed his free kick wide.

Wednesday had strong penalty appeals turned down shortly afterwards, when a clear handball in the area by Luciano Becchio was missed by referee Eddie Ilderton.

The home side took the lead just before half time when Bothroyd headed home a long-throw from Antonio.

Leeds boss Neil Warnock replaced Rodolph Austin at half time with the Jamaican international obviously struggling after only returning from international duty on the eve of the game.

David Norris replaced Austin in midfield and quickly gave Leeds more impetus in midfield.

Tonge went close again for Leeds with the first chance of the second half when his free kick just cleared the bar.

Michail Antonio was a constant thorn in the Leeds side down the left and he was instrumental in most of the home side`s attacks.

Anthony Gardner came close to doubling the lead when his effort was deflected over and Antonio also saw a shot deflected wide.

Tonge equalised for Leeds with thirteen minutes remaining after a sweeping move from Leeds found him on the edge of the area and he gave Kirkland no chance.

A Leeds fan struck Kirkland in the aftermath of the goal, which is surely going to be the main talking point of the game and the incident seemed to affect the game as a whole, as it petered out into a 1-1 draw.
