Leeds cruise into second round

Leeds progressed into the second stage of the Capital One League Cup with 4-0 victory over League One Shrewsbury Town at Elland Road.

Neil Warnock handed competitive debuts to ten players with El Hadji Diouf, who had signed earlier in the day, came off the bench late on to make his debut.

Leeds led 2-0 at half time despite Leeds keeper Paddy Kenny being much the busier.

Kenny made a couple of great saves to keep the game goalless in the opening twenty minutes and Leeds took full advantage halfway through the half.

Luciano Becchio opened the scoring for Leeds on 20 minutes when he was first to react when Rodolph Austin`s long-range effort could only be parried into the path of Becchio.

Six minutes later, Luke Varney had the simple task of tapping in after some good work from Ross McCormack.

The game was finished as a contest when David Norris scored Leeds third goal on 65 minutes following a knock down by Luke Varney.

Ross McCormack made it 4-0 from the penalty spot on 69 minutes when the referee awarded a penalty following a handball in the Shrewsbury penalty area after good work from Paul Green.

McCormack was subbed soon afterwards with El Hadji Diouf coming on for his debut.

Dominic Poleon also came off the bench to make his first Leeds appearance when he replaced Paul Green with Leeds in total control of the tie.
