Leeds scraped through to the second round of the Carling Cup after twice falling behind to Bradford City.
Ramon Nunez scored twice and Ross McCormack were on target as Leeds finally ended a spirited performance from Bradford.
Leeds made three changes from the weekend for the game.
All three changes were enforced after Robert Snodgrass, Max Gradel and Darren O`Dea were called up for international duty.
Bradford started the game well with Michael Flynn firing over.
Patrick Kisnorbo had Leeds first chance but fired over after a low corner.
Bradford were looking the better side, Mark Stewart saw a shot saved by Andy Lonergan and Flynn and Stewart again saw shots missing the target.
Leeds started to come into the game, Adam Clayton shooting over the bar.
Ramon Nunez really should have given Leeds the lead when he fired over when unmarked in front of goal after a good ball in from Clayton.
Nunez went closer minutes later when he fired into the side netting.
Bradford took the lead on 31 minutes after good work from Stewart. His ball found Jack Compton in the middle who fired past Lonergan from close range.
Leeds took control of the game after the goal up to half time but only had a deflected Ramon Nunez shot to show as the half came to an end with Bradford one up.
Leeds were back on level terms within thirty seconds of the start of the second half. Good work from Lloyd Sam eventually found Nunez, whose shot hit the underside of the bar and into the net.
The game was opening up with Compton and Howson shooting wide at each end.
Syers then went close for the visitors when he broke into the Leeds box and saw his shot pushed wide by Lonergan, although the keeper gave a goal kick.
McCormack was then put through for Leeds but he dragged his shot wide of the post.
Bradford were back in the lead on 56 minutes when Flynn beat with a left foot shot from just inside the area.
Leeds made their first substitutions just past the hour when Andy O`Brien and Paul Connolly were replaced by Leigh Bromby and Tom Lees who was making his debut in a Leeds shirt.
Leeds then had a great chance to equalise when they quickly broke but Nunez wasted a great opportunity.
Leeds equalised on 70 minutes when McCormack headed home after a great ball in by Tom Lees.
Bradford almost retook the lead immediately when Lonergan had to tip over shot from Threlfall.
Leeds were in front for the first time on 75 minutes. Once again, it was good work from Sam, his cross took a deflection and Nunez was on hand to apply the finish.
McCormack then fired wide as Leeds looked for a fourth goal.
His goal seemed to give McCormack confidence and he had another shot that Jansson had to save.
A good move by Leeds saw McCormack have another effort, this time going wide of the post.
Leeds were now in total control, Clayton stung the hands of Jansson and Branston made a desperate block to deny McCormack.
McCormack was enjoying plenty of the ball and he tested Jansson who pushed the ball out for a corner.
Young Charlie Taylor who made his Leeds debut replaced Ross McCormack in injury time.
Flynn had a late chance for Bradford but his effort went well wide of the post.
Relief around Elland Road as the referee bringing the game to an end shortly afterwards.
