Leeds complete double

Queens Park Rangers
1 - 2
Leeds United

Loftus Road

07/05/11 12.45pm

Attendance: 18,234

Referee:

Leeds finished the season off with a win at Champions Queens Park Rangers, but it was not enough to keep their slim play off hopes alive.

With Nottingham Forest winning at Crystal Palace, Leeds had to settle for seventh place with seventy-two points.

Leeds boss Simon Grayson gave a place on the bench to Patrick Kisnorbo, his first for over twelve months through injury.

Rangers made the perfect start inside a minute when Heidar Helguson was on hand to tap in after Kasper Schmeichel could only parry a Tommy Smith shot.

The goal inside thirty seconds was the second away game in a row that Leeds had fallen behind inside a minute.

Faurlin then forced Schmeichel into a good save as the home side pressed.

Max Gradel looked a constant threat for Leeds down the left and after cutting inside his shot looked to be blocked by the arm of a Rangers defender but referee Mark Clattenberg waved away the appeals.

Billy Paynter was then clearly brought down on the edge of the area when in on goal, but once again Clattenberg waved away the Leeds appeals.

Gradel then saw his cross - shot hit the top of the crossbar as Leeds enjoyed plenty of possession.

Leeds finally drew level when Richard Naylor`s long ball through the middle found Gradel and he lifted the ball on Cerny and into the net for his eighteenth goal of a productive season.

Leeds continued to enjoy plenty of the possession in the second half as the home side seemed more interested in receiving the championship trophy at the end of the game. Ross McCormack missed a good chance from close range for Leeds as the searched for a goal.

McCormack eventually gave Leeds the lead when his left foot shot took a huge deflection to leave Cerny wrong footed in the Rangers goal.

The goal was his second in two games, having gone all season without scoring and he went close again when his long range shot hit the outside of the post.

Eric Lichaj then forced Cerny into a good save as Leeds looked to extend their lead.

At the other end Schmeichel twice came to Leeds rescue with good saves as Rangers tried to find an equaliser.

Gorkss then saw his header flash wide of the post as the home side continued to look for an equaliser.

Patrick Kisnorbo came on for the final eleven minutes for Leeds but his year out of the game clearly showed as he looked rusty.

Leeds held out to complete the double over the Champions and finish their season on a high.
