Referee:

Leeds United managed to end their midweek jinx and secure their first midweek win of the season with a 2-1 win at Preston.

Simon Grayson made one change from the side that beat Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.

Billy Paynter replaced Luciano Becchio in attack after the Argentinian picked up a knock at weekend

New loan signing Barry Bannan started the game on the bench after arriving from Aston Villa on Monday.

Preston almost made a dream start when Keith Treacy hit the crossbar, with the ball coming down on the line.

The home side started well and Ian Hume saw a shot clear the bar.

John Howson had Leeds first sight of goal after a quick break but his shot went well wide of the target.

Eddie Johnson then tested Kasper Schmeichel in the Leeds goal in an open first ten minutes.

Treacy again tested Schmeichel as the home side continued to press with Leeds momentarily down to ten men after Leigh Bromby suffered a head injury.

Max Gradel then forced Andy Lonergan into his first save of the evening.

Gradel had Lonergan working again soon after with Leeds finally getting into the game.

Leeds took the lead on the half hour when Neil Kilkenny fired home from the edge of the area.

Billy Paynter then saw a shot deflected wide for a corner as Leeds started to take control.

Paynter almost doubled the lead just before half time but his strike went just wide of the post.

Preston had the early possession again like they did in the first half and they won a succession of corners that came to nothing.

The home side thought had drawn level when Sean St Ledger fired in but the assistant`s flag was up for offside.

Max Gradel went close when he fired wide, when he should have at least tested the keeper.

Billy Paynter doubled the lead and he scored his first goal for the club with 57 minutes on the clock.

Preston got back into the game just six minutes later when Ian Hume fired home from 25 yards out.

Leeds came close to restoring their two-goal lead when Ricardo Gardner and Andy Lonergan got in a mess and Paynter hit the post when he should have scored.

The home side were looking to find an equaliser and Schmeichel had to be on his toes to save from Ellington.

Barry Bannan came on to make his debut inside the final ten minutes in place of the first goalscorer Neil Kilkenny.

Leeds managed to hold on despite lat Preston pressure to secure the three points for Leeds.
