Leeds recent good run came to a shuddering halt as they suffered their heaviest defeat since 2006 as Barnsley took the honours in the Yorkshire derby at Oakwell.
United boss Simon Grayson made one change from the side that beat Swansea City on Saturday.
Lloyd Sam came into the midfield in place of Sanchez Watt.
Leeds made the perfect start in the fourth minute when John Howson fired into the back of the net from the edge of the area after Neil Kilkenny played a corner straight to him.
Hammill had Barnsley`s best chance of the opening twenty minutes but his long-range shot went into the side netting.
In a very scrappy first half hour, Leeds next chance fell to Sam after a poor clearance by Steele but Sam`s poor effort went wide of the post.
Barnsley almost equalised when a McEveley corner found Arismendi whose shot deflected of a Leeds player and out for another corner.
The home side were beginning to pressure the Leeds back line, from another corner, Arismendi once again got an effort in but his header went harmlessly wide.
The game was beginning to come to life, at the other end a low cross by Johnson was gathered by Steele with Becchio ready to pounce.
Barnsley equalised moments later, when Gary O`Connor on his debut beat Higgs from the edge of the area with only minutes remaining of the half.
Leeds came straight back at Barnsley but this time Howson`s shot went wide of the post.
The sides went in at half time all square in a game that took a long time to settle down.
Leeds looked to make the perfect start to the second half, a great ball into the cross by Sam somehow managed to elude everyone.
Leeds made an early substitution when Andy Hughes replaced Federico Bessone.
Barnsley took the lead five minutes into the half when after a scramble inside the area fell to O`Brien who tapped in
Former Leeds player Andy Gray should have given Barnsley a two-goal cushion but he shot wide when in a good position.
Simon Grayson decided to make a change just short of the hour mark, striker Ross McCormack replacing midfielder Bradley Johnson.
McCormack had a good chance to make an instant impact but his free kick failed to trouble the target.
Barnsley scored their third of the night when Arismendi was on hand to beat Higgs in the Leeds goal from a tight angle.
The home side looked more likely to increase the lead; Higgs was forced into a good save to deny O`Connor.
Leeds made their final substation of the evening when Somma came on and he came close to bringing Leeds back into the game when he forced Steele into a save.
The home side made it four when Neil Collins put through his own goal to end any hope of a Leeds comeback.
Within seconds it was five when from the kick off Andy Hammill drilled the ball past Higgs.
Leeds got a late consolation when David Somma scored his fourth goal of the season.
