Davide Somma came off the bench to secure Leeds their first win of the season against previously unbeaten Millwall at Elland Road this afternoon.
The South African making his first appearance in the league for Leeds scored twice in the final twelve minutes after being introduced to the game with fifteen minutes remaining.
Leeds stuck with the same side that drew against Nottingham Forest last Sunday and stuck with the formation (4-4-2) that got Leeds back into that game.
The Whites were looking to bring to an end, four games without a win against the visitors and took the game to them from the off.
Sanchez Watt having two efforts early on to give the Millwall defence a warning.
Totally against the run of play, Millwall took the lead on fifteen minutes.
Steve Morison`s looping ball into the middle was headed into his own net by Leeds captain Richard Naylor.
The goal didn`t stop Leeds dominance, Luciano Becchio had a great chance to equalise, his shot was deflected over the bar but the referee somehow awarded a goal kick.
John Howson really should have equalised for Leeds soon after that when he made himself room inside twelve yards but saw his shot come back off the post.
Lloyd Sam then beat Forde in the Millwall goal but a defender had got back on the line to clear the danger.
Leeds finally equalised just past the half hour when a good flowing move from left to right found Sam who made no mistake with his low shot.
Neil Collins missed a great chance to put Leeds in front soon afterwards, a good ball into the middle by Kilkenny found the head of Collins but he headed wide when he really should have done better.
It just looked a matter of time before Leeds took the lead, Watt was continuously giving the Millwall defence problems in attack and Forde was forced into a great save from a Howson shot.
Howson went close again just before the break when for the second time in the afternoon he saw an effort come back off the woodwork.
Leeds went in at half time wondering just how they wasn`t out of sight having totally dominating Millwall in the first half.
The second half started more evenly, Becchio nearly beat Forde but the Millwall keeper pulled off a great save at the feet of the striker.
As the hour mark passed Millwall finally started to come into the game and had a couple of half chances in the space of a few minutes, substitute Carter should have done better when heading wide from close range and then another effort by the same player went wide of the post.
The game looked to be heading for a draw when Grayson introduced Somma from the bench.
It was Somma`s first action of the season after serving a three-match suspension for his sending off in the final game of the season whilst on loan at Lincoln City.
Somma had joined Leeds last summer and after featuring just the once as a late substitute in the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy against Darlington.
Leeds boss Simon Grayson sent him out on loan at League Two Lincoln and he enjoyed a very productive period, scoring nine goals in fourteen appearances.
Within in three minutes of his introduction and probably his first touch he had given Leeds the lead.
Some determined work from Watt on the left hand side made him some room inside the area and he picked out the unmarked Somma who drilled his left foot shot into the net.
Millwall were nearly level within a minute when a ball into the middle from the left found Trotter whose delicate flick produced a fantastic reaction save from the more or less redundant Schmeichel in the Leeds goal.
Leeds went searching for a third goal, Watt again went close and then the woodwork came to Millwall`s rescue for the third time in the afternoon when Sam`s header hit the post.
Four minutes of time were added and with Millwall desperately searching for an equaliser, Howson broke up the play and sent a long ball in search of Somma.
Somma was one on one with the last defender and just moved the ball slightly to his right before blasting past Forde to send the Leeds fans into raptures.
Moments later the full time whistle went and Leeds celebrated their first win of the season having totally dominated Millwall for long periods of the game.
