Four star Leeds go top

Leeds United welcomed Gillingham to Elland Road and put in a four star performance to go top of League One.

The game also marked Leeds 100th game in League One.

The Whites were unchanged from the side that drew with Southend last week.

Gillingham had the first real effort but Barcham fired wide when in a good position.

This seemed to wake Leeds up and Becchio had a couple of chances in quick succession to put Leeds ahead.

The Whites did however take the lead soon afterwards, Bradley Johnson`s header from a Robert Snodgrass corner putting them one up.

Johnson scored his second of the afternoon when Beckford put him through, he drove his shot from a tight angle through Royce`s legs in the Gillingham goal and into the back of the net.

In a fairly quiet first half Leeds will have been delighted to go in at half time two goals in front.

Leeds kept up their record of not conceding a goal in the first half yet this season in their tenth game in all competitions.

Captain Jon Howson gave Leeds the perfect start to the second half when he scored his first of the season inside 30 seconds.

It could have been four almost immediately when Beckford rattled the crossbar.

Becchio was the next to go close when his header went wide.

In Gillingham`s first attack of the second half Bartram gave the visitors some hope when he pulled a goal back with a right foot shot.

Gillingham were spurred on by the goal and Grayson made a couple of changes with just over 20 minutes remaining, Michalik and Kilkenny replacing Crowe and Snodgrass.

Oli could have got Gillingham to within one gaol but put his header over the bar when in a good position.

Jermaine Beckford wrapped up the points for Leeds with ten minutes remaining, Doyle`s shot hit the bar and Beckford headed in the rebound.

Leeds continued their record breaking home form, making it 15 in a row at Elland Road.

With Norwich scoring a late equaliser at home against Charlton the result sent Leeds to the top of the table.
