Leeds leave it late

Walsall
1 - 2
Leeds United

Bescot Stadium

18/08/09 7.45pm

Attendance: 8483 (3679 Leeds)

Referee:

Leeds United named the same eleven as the one that started the weekend game at Wycombe Wanderers.

The Whites enjoyed all the early possession with chances coming think and fast. Hughes tried his luck from distance and then Howson, Kisnorbo and Beckford forced Ince in the Walsall goal into good saves to deny Leeds the lead.

Becchio had a shot just before half time but unfortunately his effort went wide.

The sides went in at half time all square; Leeds will have been disappointed after enjoying the majority of the first half.

Leeds continued where they had left off in the first half, Beckford forced another save from Ince and then Johnson and Beckford both missed the target with shots.

Beckford was again Leeds main threat but his radar was going slightly wonky in front of goal.

In a rare attempt on goal by the home side, Mark Hughes should have done better with his header when he failed to get it on target when in a great position.

Becchio had a good chance soon afterwards but his effort was blocked as the game went towards the final ten minutes.

Walsall took the lead with just over ten minutes remaining when he the refereed adjudged that Marques had brought down Jones in the Leeds area, Sam Parkin converted from the spot.

Leeds were soon deservedly back on level terms when Bradley Johnson got his head to a Robinson corner.

Within minutes Leeds had taken the lead, a long ball from Marques found the main man Beckford and this time he made no mistake.

Leeds left it late but in the end a thoroughly deserved three points for the Whites to make it three wins from three.

The team showed tonight they have the fight to get back into a game and win. Last year we would have probably felt sorry for ourselves and lost 1-0.

We would have lost this at this time last season and never seemed to be able to come from behind until Larry came. Four wins out of four, three of them away, without ever playing well. Cant be bad.

I thought the penalty looked a little harsh, fantastic finishes from Johnson and Beckford.

Was lucky not to have a pen against us in the 1st half. All in all a very good result though. Show we will keep on fighting till the end and the undefeated run will give the team alot of confidence. Long may it continue!
