Leeds United 3 - Tranmere Rovers 1

Elland Road

Beckford back with a bang

Leeds entertained Tranmere Rovers in a crucial play off spot game knowing that victory would almost guarantee their place in the Play Offs.

Jermaine Beckford started for Leeds after missing the last three in place of Liam Dickinson whilst Andy Robinson came in for the suspended Fabian Delph.

Johnny Howson had Leeds first chance in the first ten minutes when his 30 yard strike hit the inside of the post and out to safety.

Jermaine Beckford was soon back to scoring goals for Leeds, an excellent through ball from Snodgrass found Beckford and there was never any doubt.

Ex Leeds man Ian Moore had the visitor`s first real chance, his effort being pushed away for a corner by Ankergren.

Neil Kilkenny doubled the lead inside the first half hour when he hit his shot early giving the keeper no chance.

Tranmere got straight back into the game when a mix up between Sodje and Ankergren saw a back header from Sodje sail over the keeper`s head and into the net.

Ankergren was looking increasingly unsure after his mistake and Kay came close to levelling for the visitors when his header went just wide and out for a corner.

Tranmere were putting the Leeds goal under pressure and Sonko should have done better when put through on goal.

Leeds went in leading by the odd goal in three at half time but would have been glad to hear the half time whistle.

Tranmere continued to press Leeds early in the second half, Ankergren making a great save from Kay.

Leeds got a bit of breathing space when Snodgrass crossed into the middle and Becchio was there to apply the final touch just short of the hour mark.

The goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of Tranmere and Leeds coasted to victory, a result which almost certainly sees them clinch a Play off spot.
