a supporter goes to games and therefore directly financially contributes to the running of the club.

A fan may do so in a lesser way by buying the odd shirt etc

ps. I just made that up. Top of the head as they say

And yet the word Fan is short for Fanatic, a person who lives, eats, breaths and sleeps what ever they are a fan of. Supporter, on the other hand, suggests someone who upholds an Idea or thing without going over the top about it.
Strange that.
