Leeds Stadium Plan Warning

Leeds Stadium Plan Warning

Leeds City Council have warned Ken Bates that his ambitious plans for Elland Road must match the aims of council plans for the area.

Bates has announced that he wishes to embark on a major rebuilding project that would see the current home of Leeds United renovated and improved into a world class facility. The former Chelsea chairman is looking to build two hotels, a club megastore, shopping centres, a health club and a Leeds United club museum. All of this announced whilst Leeds find themselves in the 3rd tier of English football!

Council leader Andrew Carter gave his views on Uncle Ken’s potential pie-in-the-sky plans:

'Our priority is to get the best deal for the council-tax payers of Leeds,'

'We expect that whatever development which may or may not take place at Elland Road - and they must first of all go through the planning process - would be folly if it did not compliment the council's plans.'

'Our officers have been talking to Mr Bates' representatives for some time and will continue to do so.'

It is likely that some form of compromise may be offered, as the council look to re-develop the area along similar lines, including the construction of a railway station for Elland Road.

Of course all of this relies on Mr Bates re-purchasing the stadium!
