'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Oakwood Owls Prepare Anti-Race Days

The Oakwood Owls U17s will be running 2 anti racism football events during the October school holiday period. Our activities are in conjunction with the 'Let's kick racism out of football' project, which aims to raise awareness on the issue of racism in football & life via community football activities.

The projects intention is to bring as many different cultures together in the name of football, in order to help break down racial barriers within the sport.

Next Thursday (25th) skills competitions will take place at Fearnville, Oakwood Lane, Leeds (6.00 - 8.30pm), where young people aged 14-17 can test their football accuracy in crossbar challenge and penalty shoot out competitions. There will be awards for the overall competition winners. The 2 hour event will conclude with a group football match.

On Friday 26th (6.30 - 8.30pm) the group will host an 11-a-side lads v dads/guests football match, when Former Bradford City defender and 'Kick it out' ambassador Ces Podd will be involved with the Owls group & local youth workers for the challenge match.

Ces was one of the very first black players to ply his trade in the English game during the 70s & early 80s. He went on to record 565 first team appearances for the Bantams, a record which still remains intact today. Fridays event will conclude with a Ces Podd question & answer session inside the Fearnville pod and I'm certain the evening will prove to be a huge educational success for all of the young people involved. Ces is a great bloke, with lots of experience in the game. He has lots of football stories to tell and will offer helpful information, which I believe can only help improve a youngsters self esteem & football mentality.

If your organisations know of any young people that like to join us on either or both of the dates, you can contact Rod via the Oakwood Owls site (details listed below). We are a Leeds City council youth service provision, so ideally I'd like to see up to 30 youths involved if at all possible. I'm sure both days will be lots of fun & very worthwhile.
