Leeds: Owls Set For Anti Race Event

The Oakwood Owls football youth group are set to run 4 football related events during the “Kick it Out” week, designed to remove racism from the game.

Group leader Rod Christopher explained: “Our events will run between 18-30th October at Fearnville, where we aim to run a multicultural 8-a-side 6 team tournament, a multicultural 11-a-side lads v dads match, Penalty & crossbar challenge competitions, a football quiz and a Q&A evening inside our pod base.

For the Q&A date we hope to have former Bradford City defender Ces Podd on hand to talk about his professional playing career and of experiences encountered as one of the very first black players to play the game in Britain.

All of the above programmes were discussed & agreed by the group & we all look forward to running the events over the coming 4 weeks.

Last year the Owls also put on 4 events, which are similar to this years programme, but this time around the emphasis is focussed more so around breaking down cultural barriers and gaining a better understanding of racism in football and society, as well as learning how to correctly deal with any such issues in personal life.

I’m sure we'll have some fantastic times in this particular project and hopeful it can be a great learning curve for our youngsters.
