Leeds handed Pompey cup test
Leeds will face Portsmouth at Fratton Park in the second round of the Carling Cup following the win over Macclesfield earlier in the week.
The game will be played during the week commencing August 27 and, with boss Dennis Wise admitted the cup is not a major concern this season, it's hard to see Leeds reaching the third-round. However, cups often produce surprises so, even if fringe players are used, a win is still possible.
Portsmouth have had a solid start to the season without being overly impressive, drawing 2-2 against Premier League newcomers Derby on the opening day and then holding Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at home.
Meanwhile, assistant boss Gus Poyet is happy with the start to the season as Leeds look to notch-up 105 points and secure promotion back to the Championship at the first attempt.
He told the club's official site: "Two wins in two games is good. You could feel people were a bit worried in pre-season with the results, but we said right at the beginning the key was the first game of the season.
"The lads have been great, in the second half on Saturday and the last 60 minutes on Tuesday. It was different teams with different players, but they were both professional performance."
Tomorrow (Saturday) sees Leeds playing host a Southend side that lost 2-1 at home to Leyton Orient on the first day of the season. Three wins from three games is surely possible, and it would leave Leeds on minus nine points...but more importantly would send a message around the league that the players have what it takes to succeed.
