'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Tranmere Rovers 1-2 Leeds United

During the 2006/07 season, ex-Brentford striker Tresor Kandol did very little to convince Leeds United supporters that he could do a job for the then Championship side, scoring just once in 17 appearances following his £200,000 move. 07/08 however appears to be a case of new season, new Kandol as the Congolese front man scored a last gasp goal to give Leeds the 3 points away to Tranmere Rovers.

Despite starting their first ever season in the 3rd tier of English football on -15 points for breaching the administration regulations outlined by the Football League, over 2,000 Leeds fans travelled to Merseyside hopeful that the new-look Leeds side would begin the season how they need to if they are to survive.

It was however Tranmere that were the brighter of the two sides early on and despite the efforts of Casper Ankergren, saving well from Chris Shucker it was Rovers who took the lead as Chris Greenacre popped up at the back post to put the home side 1-0 up after 21 minutes. Following the goal Leeds pushed on in search of an equaliser, but had to wait until 10 minutes after the interval for Matt Heath to restore parity, heading home from a superb Alan Thompson free-kick.

Then came goal of the season in the 89th minute as Kandol stooped to nod an Andrew Hughes cross past Coyne from close range, sending Leeds fans into raptures and Tresor into a cartwheel celebration. Leeds did have the ball in the back of the net again during injury time; however Jermaine Beckford was ruled to have been offside shortly before lifting the ball over the onrushing Rovers keeper.

So 3 points in the bag, however still firmly rooted to the bottom of the table with a more than likely pointless appeal to the FA yet to come…life certainly isn`t dull at Leeds United!

I have been one of Kandol's biggest critics, I hope he well and truly shuts me up this season. Hopefully the goal and his overall performance will give him great confidence.
