Berlin Wall Halts Leeds United

The tour to Germany didn`t have the best of starts on Wednesday night as Leeds United fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Regionalliga Nord (III) side FC. Union Berlin at their Alte Försterei stadium.

The game was Dennis Wise`s first attempt at a line-up this summer that wasn`t interrupted by a mass of half-time changes, though what looks likely to be the Leeds United "first team" for the upcoming season were given a good chance to impress. The interest from Berlin supporters was high and the game had been initially delayed due to problems in trying to squeeze into the rather delightful looking ground.

The German 3rd division side started brightly and ex-Watford goalkeeper Scott Loach needed to be on hand to make a number of early saves as Union looked for an early goal. The likes of Prutton, Kandol and Thompson were impressing for the Whites however it was the "Berliners" that struck, when Marco Gebhart, fired his team ahead just before half time.

The start of the second half saw just one change, as goalkeeper Loach was replaced by Nick Hamman and it didn`t take long before Kandol and Beckford gave a quick glimpse of what they could do together, linking up well before Beckford fired an overhead kick up and over the bar. As Leeds pushed for the equaliser, Berlin turned it around and hit back on the break with Nico Patchinski finishing off a great team move.

Leeds United now move onto Dresden for Saturday`s game against the team of the very same name! Lets hope they can do a little bit better next time up.

Leeds United Squad: Loach (Hamman 46), Richardson, Marques, Heath, Parker, Douglas, Prutton, Thompson (Weston 59), Lewis (Carole 59), Kandol (Constantine 59), Beckford (Elliott 71). Subs Not Used: Delph.
