Leeds Victorious In Ireland

The new look Leeds United squad spent the weekend in Ireland taking on Eircom Division 1 side Shelbourne United at Dublin`s Tolka Park.

It was definitely a new look Leeds side, with a number of trailists given their chance to impress boss Dennis Wise and his assistant Gus Poyet, who had been rumoured to be in the frame for a starting role himself.

Only former Norwich and Southend United goalkeeper Danny Gay survived half-time, everyone else played just 45 minutes each.

32 minutes into the match, it was old-hand Robbie Blake who opened the scoring, curling a free kick past James Hussey, having previously hit the woodwork earlier in the game.

The second Leeds United goal came from former Nottingham Forest midfielder David Prutton, currently on trial at the club, tapping in from close range on 76 minutes.

Assistant manager Gustavo Poyet, who in the end didn`t feature at any in the game couldn`t have been happier with the way things went in Ireland as he told Leedsunited.com:
'The lads did fantastic,' said Poyet. 'Everyone showed they wanted to be part of the team, and it was very important to have a look at the players.

'We said to the players 'you have 45 minutes each so you can give it a good 45' and that's what they did."

'It was an excellent ending to a perfect first week of pre-season training."

The teams:
Shelbourne: Hussey, L'Estrange, McCullogh, Keely, Gartland, Roche, Chambers, O'Brien, Leech, Quinn, Lacey. Subs: Harte, Flood, Curran, Gilbert, O'Reilly, Broughan, O'Dowd, Byrne.

1st Half Leeds: Gay, Bayly, Marques, Coughlan, Lewis, Carole, Fry, Howson, Westlake, Blake, Elliott.

2nd Half Leeds> Gay, Richardson, Heath, Douglas, Boertien, Mullan, Thompson, Prutton, Delph, Constantine, Kandol.
