LUFC Christiansen - We Were Just Not Good Enough

LUFC Christiansen - We Were Just Not Good Enough

Leeds United head coach Thomas Christiansen admitted his side were just not good enough as their poor start to 2018 continued with a 4-1 home defeat to Cardiff City.

Leeds conceded four goals for the second home game in a row as promotion chasing Cardiff punished a sloppy Leeds performance in which the second half with ten men following the sending off of Gaetano Berardi, a fourth red card for Leeds in six games.

The defeat means Leeds have picked up just two points from their last six Championship games and Christiansen says his side lost the game in the first half.

'We were just not good enough, especially in the first half, because this is where we lost the game," Christiansen told the BBC Website.

'I don't think the goals were because of concentration or mentality, because after you see the mentality in the second half to try to change that.

'I'm disappointed with the situation [Berardi's sending off], because he already had one yellow card when he went down to the ground, he should have been more intelligent in that situation.'

Leeds were behind as early as the ninth minute when Callum Paterson headed home.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga and Ezgjan Alioski then somehow failed to equalise for Leeds when they both spurned great opportunities.

The final five minutes of the first half saw Leeds capitulate. Junior Hoilett doubled the lead when he slid the ball home.

Berardi then saw red for Leeds as he picked up his second yellow card of the afternoon for a foul on Gary Madine. His red card was the third for a Leeds player in the first half in Leeds last four games. From the resulting free-kick, Sean Morrison headed home for the visitors.

Despite being down to ten-men, Leeds fought bravely in the second half and Sol Bamba put through his own net to give Leeds a lifeline early in the second half.

Cardiff were to have the last say though and Anthony Pilkington fired home with two minutes remaining to inflict another defeat on Leeds.
