Are Leeds United To Be The Championship Nearly Men?

As you know, Leeds United currently find themselves in a potentially exciting position as we head into the second-half of the season. Thomas Christiansen`s side are within close reach of a play-off place and only 9 points off automatic promotion. With some key signings this January, could this be our year?

At Vital Leeds we, from bitter experience, aren`t getting carried away but it is tight at the top and who knows, we might be able to take advantage of that and push ourselves into contention.

We only just missed out under the guidance of Garry Monk last season - who then sadly and controversially left us to join Middlesbrough - how did that work out for you Gary?

I personally think that his departure hurt because Monk was such a popular figure at Leeds, but it is fair to credit him with steadying the ship following a difficult few years for us. The general consensus though; and feel free to let us know in the article comments or our forum (Click Here) if you disagree, is that Christiansen's arrival has led to further improvements. Or has it?

In Christiansen, just like with Monk, Leeds look impressive under the guidance of a young manager but the situation we find ourselves in this season is comparable to the last - fighting for promotion but at risk of just missing out albeit, we still have 19 games left.

We also had to endure some big departures in the summer, namely Chris Wood`s sale to Burnley, (despite the manager spelling out exactly why we needed to keep him: LUFC Christiansen - We Must Keep Chris Wood) and that void is yet to be filled - so there`s certainly an argument to suggest that the squad at Christiansen`s disposal this season is weaker to the team Monk had last term.

In the grand scheme of things, this seasons team and last years team are very much equal in their respective positions - so it`s impossible at this stage to say whether Leeds have improved or not. Should they go on to secure a spot in the play-offs, then that would show clear evidence of moving forward. And if he got us to 2nd and automatic promotion, well, not only should he get the keys to the City, he can have the keys to my house and car as well (wife included - in fact, please take the wife regardless!)

I don`t want to build my hopes up too much, ten years out of the Premiership has taught me not to get carried away, so should Leeds miss out again, which is possible considering how tight things are at the top of the Championship, then Christiansen`s side will be in exactly the same position as we found ourselves in last year - although the situation may then prove to be bleaker. See, I`m sorry, but experience has made it nearly impossible for me to manage a whole article in positive mode!

I`m not sure if I am being too bleak? Are Leeds are at risk of becoming the Championship`s nearly men? Not quite having enough to push for promotion, and it`s becoming increasingly difficult to compete with the clubs coming down from the Premier League - as shown by Aston Villa and Middlesbrough`s immense spending since their relegations.

Christiansen`s side currently show no ability to compete financially and that may become an issue should the gap on the field grow. However, by securing a play-off spot this year, there would be evidence that Leeds are on the rise - and that would help significantly in the quest to bring new faces in at Elland Road.
