LUFC Cutting Out The Cake Helps Young Midfielder
Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips says healthy eating has helped him become a regular in the side this season.
The 21-year-old has been a regular in the Leeds side this season under head coach Thomas Christiansen and he has chipped in with five goals from midfield already this season.
The former academy product had been an ever-present this season until he was forced to miss the clash against Derby County through suspension after picking up his fifth yellow card of the season.
He was a surprise name in the starting eleven on the opening weekend of the season at Bolton Wanderers, he repaid the faith shown in him by Christiansen by netting twice in the 3-2 win, and Phillips admits his head coach had a word with him in the summer about eating properly.
"I feel like I`ve improved a lot," Phillips told the Yorkshire Evening Post.
"Physically I`m quite big so I`ve got quite a bit of body fat. He (Christiansen) tried to make me slim down so I could be quicker and a little bit sharper.
"It`s hard because you love a chocolate cake after Sunday dinner but you`ve got to nip these things in the bud. I`ve started eating a lot healthier. In the first couple of weeks I felt a bit drained but by cutting down on certain things I`ve felt the benefit. You can see that in my performances."
Phillips is amongst the most experienced players for Leeds despite being only 21. The midfielder has made 68 appearances for Leeds since making his debut in April 2015, with only Liam Cooper and Stuart Dallas having made more first team appearances for the club.
Cooper (103) is the only current Leeds player to have made over 100 appearances for the club and Dallas (99) could join him if he features against Middlesbrough on Sunday.
