LUFC Clough Admits Excellent Leeds Are Promotion Contenders

Burton Albion manager Nigel Clough admitted after the game that Leeds United were excellent and he believes they are genuine promotion contenders this season.

The last time the two sides met in April, Clough`s side put one of the final nails in Leeds coffin as their play-off hopes died, but on Saturday, he could only stand back and applaud the performance of Leeds who continued their excellent start to the season with a 5-0 demolition of his Burton side.

Clough admitted after the game that sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and admit how good the opposition were on the day.

'We couldn't do too much about the quality of the goals they scored. It's very rare you get a goalkeeper that's conceded five goals and can't say he had a chance with any of them," Clough told the BBC Website.

'It's the nature of Burton Albion in the Championship. We know we're going to lose games.

'It's not nice when you lose 5-0 but you have to hold your hands up sometimes and say the opposition were excellent.

'Leeds' movement and the quality of their finishing was top-class. If they play like that, they're genuine promotion contenders.'

Leeds dominated from start to finish and they could have already by the time they opened the scoring on 20 minutes when Pierre-Michel Lasogga opened the scoring on his Leeds debut. Further first half goals from Kalvin Phillips and Pablo Hernandez, killed the game off as a contest before half time.

Kemar Roofe and a second from Lasogga had Leeds 5-0 ahead before the hour and it could have been many more over the 90 minutes as Leeds recorded 30 attempts on goal with Burton managing just one effort off target in the game.

The win for Leeds lifts them up to second in the Championship at this early stage of the season, their highest positon since December 2010.
