LUFC New Keeper Ready To Fight For His Place In The Side

LUFC New Keeper Ready To Fight For His Place In The Side

New Leeds United goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald says he has joined the club to play games and he is ready to fight for the number one position.

The 27-year-old joined Leeds at the end of last month on a three-year deal from German Bundesliga side Werder Bremen and he faces tough competition for the number one shirt this season from Rob Green and Marco Silvestri.

Wiedwald had been a regular in the starting line-up for Werder Bremer in the last two seasons in the Bundesliga and he has arrived at Leeds ready to fight for the number one jersey.

"I have come here to play," Wiedwald told BBC Radio Leeds .

"There is great competition for place. Last year, Rob Green played every game in the Championship and he has a lot of experience but I have come to play and I want to show the team that I can improve us.

"It is a dream for a lot of players to come to England and play in either the Championship or Premier League.

"Now I am here, I want to achieve great things."

Wiedwald is one of nine new signings so far announced this summer for new head coach Thomas Christiansen, as the club look to build on their seventh placed finish last season.

The squad are now in Austria for eight days where they will now play two games instead of the planned three, after their opening game against German side FC Ingolstadt 07 this Sunday was cancelled by local authorities in Austria. The local authorities were worried that the game had the potential for violence.

With Leeds having just one pre-season game remaining on their return from Austria, Christiansen will probably have a clearer picture of who he wants as his number one for the new season.
