LUFC Cellino Ban Is Suspended Pending An Appeal

Leeds United joint owner Massimo Cellino has had his twelve-month ban suspended pending an appeal.

Cellino was due to start a 12-month ban imposed by the Football Association on February 18th after he was found guilty of breaking FA regulations following the sale of striker Ross McCormack to Fulham in the summer of 2014.

The Italian was initially given an 18-month ban by the Football Association in December but that was recently reduced on appeal to 12-months with a fine imposed also being reduced.

Cellino was initially banned after he was alleged to have made a payment to Barry Hughes, an unlicensed agent to McCormack.

Derek Day, the agent of McCormack, received a £75,000 fine and a 18-month ban of which 11 months was suspended.

The ban was reduced on appeal earlier this month but Cellino is now going to appeal for a second time using the FA`s rule K for his reason for a further appeal.

Leeds released the following statement on their website on Thursday afternoon.

On 3 February 2017, Massimo Cellino`s 18-month suspension for breaching The FA`s Football Agent Regulations was reduced to 12 months following a successful appeal. The Leeds United owner also had his £250,000 fine reduced to £100,000.

The sanctions imposed by an FA Appeal Board against co-owner Mr. Cellino have now been stayed pending the outcome of a legal challenge brought by Mr. Cellino in arbitration pursuant to FA Rule K.

Mr. Cellino alleges the decision of the FA Appeal Board was irrational, procedurally unfair, and that there was apparent bias. All other aspects of the arbitration shall remain confidential until such time as a decision has been made. Once a decision has been reached by the Tribunal it will be published.
