LUFC On This Day - August 2nd Leeds lift shield
A look back at what was being reported on Vital Leeds on August 2nd in the recent history of Leeds United.
We will actually start with one from 1969 when Leeds United lifted the Charity Shield with a 2-1 win over Manchester City at Elland Road.
Jack Charlton and Eddie Gray are on target in front of almost 40,000 fans.
Leeds and Ipswich agreed a deal that sees Ian Westlake join Leeds and Dan Harding move in the opposite direction.
After weeks of talking about it, Leeds chairman Ken Bates finally reported Chelsea to the FA for the alleged tapping-up of three of United`s bright young stars.
Two of these players, Tom Taiwo and Michael Woods, have since joined the Londoners with Danny Rose opting to stay at Elland Road.
Manchester City and Aston Villa both admit their interest in Leeds young midfielder Fabian Delph, who sat out the win at Burnley the previous day with his future looking away from Elland Road.
Leeds boss Simon Grayson is boosted by the news that the injury suffered by Robert Snodgrass in Norway the previous week is not as bad as first thought although he is likely to be out until September.
Leeds United lost out in their bid to sign midfielder Keith Andrews.
The 30 year old decided not to join Leeds after negotiations with the club, stating better options lay elsewhere at this moment in time, according to his agent.
Leeds United striker Ross McCormack says he is waiting for a new offer from the club before deciding his future.
McCormack is out of contract next summer and he has already turned down a new offer from the club.
Last season`s leading goalscorer with 19 goals, has been linked with a number of clubs during the summer, but McCormack says he is waiting for a new offer from Leeds before deciding where his future lies.
Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, McCormack said, 'Everybody knows there have been offers come in for me from other clubs and the club have turned them down. I am just waiting for another contract offer from the club and I will either sign it or I won`t, we will take it from there.'
The Scottish international striker captained the side in their latest pre-season friendly in Norway on Wednesday night in a game that finished 1-1.
McCormack has already been amongst the goals in pre-season having netted three times, including two at Torquay last Friday.
Transfer listed Leeds United striker Billy Paynter is training with Doncaster Rovers.
Paynter started the week training with championship side Blackpool but the seaside club have decided against offering the 28 year old a deal.
Rovers have been linked with a move for Paynter in the last week and Rovers boss Dean Saunders as said this week that he is looking to bring in three or four players before the weekend.
Paynter has spent two frustrating seasons at Elland Road following his signing from Swindon Town in the summer of 2010.
The 28 year old has netted just three times in twenty-eight appearances in his two seasons with the club.
Paynter made just three appearances last season and he spent time out on loan at Brighton and Hove Albion where he failed to score in ten appearances.
The striker was signed by Leeds after a hugely successful spell at Swindon Town where he netted 52 goals in 137 appearances, including 29 goals in League One during the 2009/10 season.
