LUFC Leeds leave it late to beat Guiseley

Leeds United left it late to defeat non-league side Guiseley in their second pre-season friendly of the summer.

Goals from Jason Pearce and Matt Smith secured a 2-0 win for Leeds as their Conference North Division opponents frustrated the whites.

Manager Dave Hockaday once again fielded two different sides with ten of the starting eleven enjoying the opening 60 minutes of the game. Sam Byram replaced Zac Thompson on 55 minutes before Hockaday made ten changes on the hour.

The game also gave the vast majority of Leeds fans in the 2,200 crowd their first chance to see new signings Stuart Taylor, Marco Silvestre, Tommaso Bianchi and Souleymane Doukara.

Doukara had an early opportunity but he dragged his effort wide of the post as Steve Morison and Bianchi had Leeds best chances of the first half. Morison headed into the side netting whilst Bianchi saw his effort from outside the area well saved.

Youngster Lewis Cook started for Leeds and he impressed in the midfield and he also came close to opening the scoring in the first half when he fired just over.

Guiseley missed a great chance to open the scoring in the opening minutes of the second half but Jack Lawlor fired wide when he should have at least tested Silvestri in the Leeds goal.

The wholesale changes for Leeds gave the whites a fresh approach and Smith and Lewis Walters both had chances to open the scoring within fifteen minutes of coming off the bench.

Pearce and Smith both had chances in the final ten minutes as Leeds searched for an opener and it was Pearce who scored the opener with five minutes remaining when he headed home an Aidy White corner.

Smith wrapped up the win in the final minute when he had the simple task of guiding home a Sam Byram cross from close range.

Leeds will now prepare for their next pre-season game at Mansfield Town on Tuesday night.
