LUFC Leeds break club record with 16-0 win

LUFC Leeds break club record with 16-0 win

Leeds United were much too strong for Italian part time side FC Gherdeina in their opening pre-season game as they set a new club record win with victory in Italy.

Leeds beat FC Gherdeina 16-0 with Matt Smith scoring six and Noel Hunt also netting a hat-trick.

New first team coach used the game as an opportunity to field two different sides in each half as Leeds romped to victory.

Leeds gave debuts to new goalkeepers Marco Silvestre and Stuart Taylor and there was also a second half appearance for trialist Andre Blackman.

After a quiet start, Noel Hunt fired home a first half hat-trick as Leeds led 7-0 at the break. Hunt was on hand to direct home a Charlie Taylor free-kick and he was on hand again to head home following a David Norris ball into the middle. Hunt completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot when Sam Byram was fouled in the area.

Steve Morison netted twice for Leeds in the first half and there were also goals for Lewis Walters and David Norris before the break.

Despite changing the side in the second half, Leeds carried on where they left off in the first half and Matt Smith completed a hat-trick of headers as Leeds hit double figures.

Luke Murphy made it 11-0 halfway through the second half when he fired home from the edge of the area.

Smith netted his fourth and fifth and Dominic Poleon netted twice as Leeds equalled the club record 15-0 win.

Smith broke the club record as he netted his double hat-trick to make it 16-0 as Leeds enjoyed a good start to pre-season.

New Leeds goalkeeper Marco Silvestri even finished the game in goal for the part time Italians.

*Leeds previous record pre-season victory came against Swedish side Byske in July 1999 when they won 15-0 and I would like to thank @lufcstats for the information.
