LUFC On This Day - June 30th
A look back at what happened on this day June 30th in the recent history of Leeds United.
Leeds have never played a game on this day in their history, so today we look back in the Vital Leeds archives of the last few years to see what was being reported.
July is just around the corner, and it brings with it a country-wide ban on smoking in public places, including pubs. Much importantly than that, it also should see within the first week of the month the agreement from the Football League that the CVA proposal made by Ken Bates has been accepted, allowing the club to finally enter the summer transfer market.
The 28 day period of which objections to the CVA can be put forward by creditors expires on the 3rd July, meaning that Dennis Wise should get the go-ahead to start signing up new players, and negotiating contracts from those players who wish to stay on at Elland Road. Wisey had previously admitted that he had missed out on a number of targets due to having his hands tied by the clubs financial issues, however chairman-to-be-again Ken Bates seems confident that the manager has players in his sights and is ready for the green light next week, with at least 6 new additions targeted:
Bates told Yorkshire Radio: 'Dennis has identified 10 players and has tentatively planned to bring in six of them.'
Leeds United continue to be chosen by the TV companies for the new Championship season with their fourth game now announced for live TV coverage.
Leeds will now be on Sky Sports against Middlesbrough at the Riverside on Saturday October 16th with the slightly later kick off time of 5.20pm.
Leeds United boss Brian McDermott says he will be adding to his squad next week.
McDermott was being interviewed on Talksport on Saturday and talking about the financial situation at Elland Road, he admitted that he needed to move players on to bring players in.
Striker Steve Morison joined Millwall on a season long loan on Friday, freeing up some wages and McDermott says a new signing will be coming into Elland Road in the next week.
Speaking on Talksport, McDermott said, 'We had a conversation a week ago and it was decided that I needed to lose one or two players to bring one or two in.
'I have got one coming in next week, so that is the situation.'
McDermott was also asked if that player would be his former Reading striker Noel Hunt, who has been strongly linked with a move to Elland Road this summer.
The Leeds boss said would not give anything away but with Hunt becoming a free agent on Monday and due to return from his honeymoon this week it is highly likely that the Republic of Ireland international will be the second signing of the summer for Leeds.
So far, Leeds have brought in striker Matt Smith from Oldham Athletic on a free transfer.
