LUFC Late heartache for Grimes and Ireland
Young Leeds United goalkeeper Eric Grimes hopes of going to this summer`s European under-19 championship finals look slim after Republic of Ireland suffered an agonising defeat in the second game of three in their elite group.
Turkey beat Republic of Ireland 2-1 with a late winner and the defeat leaves them one point behind both Turkey and their final opponents Serbia, who beat Iceland 6-0.
Grimes was again in excellent form for Ireland with the Republic of Ireland official website reporting.
'Irish keeper Eric Grimes had an excellent evening and showed his quality in the 38th minute when he kept out a close range effort from Melih Okutan.` And the match report highlighted a number of fine saves made by the young 19-year-old.
Turkey finally beat Grimes from a set piece on 55 minutes but Ireland were level within eight minutes when Alan Browne scored from the penalty spot.
A draw would have sent Ireland into their final game knowing a win against Serbia would be enough to win the group and see them qualify for the finals in Hungary in July but their hopes were dashed with just ten minutes remaining when Turkey found a winner.
Ireland must now beat Serbia and hope that Turkey fail to beat Iceland in the final game. The final games in the group will be played on Monday afternoon.
