McDermott hoping correct takeover decision is made

Leeds United boss Brian McDermott is hoping that the takeover of the club will finally be resolved in the next week after three months of uncertainty.

The Football League issued a statement on Thursday stating that they would make a decision in the next ten days on the proposed takeover of the club by Italian Massimo Cellino, whose family run business Eleonora Sport Limited have agreed a deal with current owners GFH Capital to buy a controlling 75 per cent stake in the club.

Cellino has been waiting since January for the Football League to make a decision as they assess whether his company passes the fit and proper person test to run a Football League club.

The Italian entrepreneur came into the fold at Leeds after a consortium led by current club Managing Director David Haigh and Andrew Flowers, the Managing Director of the clubs main shirt sponsor Enterprise Insurance, failed in their attempts to buy a controlling stake in the club.

It has been a turbulent few months at Elland Road, one that has seen McDermott sacked and reappointed club manager and also seen them slip alarmingly down the league table after a run of just two wins in fifteen games.

McDermott is hoping that a decision is made this week and he is still desperate to be the man to lead Leeds back into the Premier League.

Speaking to LUTV, McDermott said, "It is such an opportunity for us to get the club back to where it belongs.

"I am just hoping that next week that the ownership situation is resolved, I hope the right decision is made and we can kick this club on.

"It is so important that the decision is made, we get the right decision and then we can all get behind each other and move this club forward.

"What I want to achieve at Leeds United is to put a team together, which replicates Leicester and Burnley, with a fantastic team ethic with a winning mentality. We haven`t got there yet but it is something I want to keep working on."


The decision by the Football League could depend on the court appearance by Cellino in Sardinia on Tuesday who is facing a charge of tax evasion.

Cellino is being charged for failing to pay €400,000 on a yacht he took into Italy in 2010 from the US. The lawyers acting for Cellino are confident he will be found not guilty, claiming the yacht is still owned by a US company who have taken it into Italy still carrying the US flag.

A decision is expected to be made in the Italian court on Tuesday, clearing the way for the Football League to make their final decision.
