McDermott wants to help Butland in World Cup dream

McDermott wants to help Butland in World Cup dream

Leeds United boss Brian McDermott says he wants to help on loan goalkeeper Jack Butland realise his dream of travelling with England to the World Cup finals in Brazil this summer.

Butland produced an outstanding performance for Leeds on his debut on Saturday to thwart Middlesbrough at the Riverside.

The 20-year-old has arrived at Elland Road on loan for the remainder of the season from Stoke City after he found himself back down the pecking order at the Britannia Stadium following the return to full fitness of Asmir Begovic. With the World Cup finals just four months away, Butland needs regular first team football if he is to have any chance of making Roy Hodgson`s squad and McDermott says he is hoping he can help him. Speaking after the Middlesbrough game, McDermott said, "Butland was outstanding and he made a couple of fantastic saves and he came for crosses.

"He is hungry, he wants to go to the World Cup with England and we want to help him."

Butland was named man of the match after producing fine saves to deny both Jacob Butterfield and Albert Adomah, as Leeds held on for a point in a goalless draw. Whilst Butland, who holds the record as the youngest goalkeeper to play a senior game for England at just 19, wants to concentrate on playing regularly, he admits it would be a dream if he can make the plane for Rio. Speaking after the game, Butland said, "I want to focus on playing, it is the target and it would be a dream to go to the World Cup.

"I want to keep playing, keep playing well and we will see whether it becomes a reality."

Butland has represented England at six levels during his career. In 2012, he was part of the England squad in the 2012 European championships and later that summer he represented Great Britain in the 2012 Olympic Games, making five appearances.

After his fine performance for Leeds on Saturday, Butland will now wait to find out whether he will continue to feature for Gareth Southgate`s England under-21 side for their European Championship qualifier against Wales or whether he will be included in the senior squad, for the friendly against Denmark at Wembley.

Both squads will be announced this week for the games that both take place on Wednesday March 5th.
