LUFC McDermott hits back at Warnock

Leeds United boss Brian McDermott has hit back at former boss Neil Warnock.

McDermott replaced Warnock as Leeds boss in April, with the side spiralling down the championship table after run of six games without a win.

Warnock, who writes a weekly article in the Independent recently claimed with Leeds going well in the championship that McDermott only had to put the icing on the cake with the squad that he had built at Elland Road and McDermott says they have come a long way since his arrival in April.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of the game with Blackburn on Wednesday, McDermott said, "It wasn`t an instant job here, it certainly hasn`t been but we are doing alright in the short space of time I have been here.

"The previous manager did an article in the papers recently and he said all I needed to do was put the icing on the cake with the squad that he left.

"I am not sure that is correct. When we came in April, we had issues and we weren`t even sure we would stay in this division.

"It has been a good first half of the season when you consider where we were when we came into the club in April where we were going and where we are now."

Leeds have reached the halfway stage in this championship season in seventh place after losing just two of their last ten games. Warnock`s side were three points better off at the same stage last season but a run of just five wins in eighteen games saw them only five points above the relegation zone when he departed the club following the defeat to Derby on April 1st.

McDermott steadied the ship in the final weeks of the season, winning three of the five remaining games to finish the season in thirteenth place.
