Former Leeds youngster back in championship

Former Leeds United youngster Patrick Antelmi is back in the championship after signing for Wigan Athletic.

The striker was released by Leeds in the summer and he has been without a club since, until new Wigan boss Uwe Rosler made him his first signing for the Lancashire club.

After unsuccessful trials at Blackburn Rovers and Wolverhampton Wanderers this season, where he couldn`t agree a deal, he has signed for Wigan on an eighteen-month deal.

The 19-year-old Australian arrived at Leeds in the summer of 2012 and he was a regular in the development squad side. He had scored six goals in his twelve appearances prior to the dismissal of former boss Neil Warnock and he says he had agreed a two-year deal at Elland Road with Warnock just days before his dismissal in April.

Speaking in the Australian Four Four Two magazine, Antelmi told of his bad luck at Elland Road. 'Leeds was just unfortunate, Neil Warnock, before he left, offered me a two-year deal and, four days after me and Neil sat down, he got the sack.

'I had to wait and be patient for someone else to come in. When Brian McDermott came in he turned around and said he's sorry he doesn't know me, so I had to pack my bags and go.

'I had a good season with Leeds, was the top goalscorer in the Under 21s, played every game unless I was injured.

'But it was just unfortunate, it's just one of those things in football. You get hit but you've got to get back up and keep going, that's what I did. I've got something now and I'm happy.'

Antelmi finished the season with seven goals for the development squad before being named amongst those players on the released list in the summer.
