LUFC Clark - Leeds did make Burke enquiry

Birmingham City manager Lee Clark has confirmed that Leeds United made an approach for winger Chris Burke before the transfer window closed on Monday.

Leeds boss Brian McDermott spoke to Clark about the possibility of taking Burke to Elland Road but the Birmingham boss says whilst McDermott seemed keen the club were put off by the asking price.

Clark said, 'I had a conversation with Brian on Sunday. He basically asked about Chris.

'They (Leeds) said they were willing to do that deal, but thankfully Brian didn't come back and pursue it"

It is the second time that Leeds have enquired about the 29-year-old Scotland international.

Previous manager Neil Warnock tried to lure Burke to Elland Road on the final day of the January transfer window but the club were once again put off by the asking price.

McDermott admitted earlier this week that he had enquired about an unnamed winger before the window closed but he felt the deal wasn`t right for the club.

McDermott said, "We made an enquiry for a wide player who is 30 years of age and they wanted 600 grand for him. It didn`t make sense to me.

"It`s got to make sense and be financially right as well as the right player. In eight months` time, he`ll be a free transfer."

Burke, who cost Birmingham nothing when he signed for them in the summer of 2011, is out of contract at St Andrews at the end of the season.
