LUFC Green wants to make holding role his own

Leeds United utility player Paul Green is looking to make the holding role in the Leeds side his own after an impressive start to pre-season.

Green, who finished last season in the role for Brian McDermott, has also been used in a similar role when on international duty with Republic of Ireland and the 30-year-old, who played in a number of positions last season, is hoping to cement himself in the position this season.

'I played the last five games there last season and enjoyed it, helping break things up and giving it to the other midfielders and the strikers," Green told the official website .

'I hope I can make it my own. I've done it for Ireland, and I have played there before in my career

'You have to be disciplined, but I'm really enjoying it.'

Green made 36 appearances for Leeds last season, his first at the club following his summer move from Derby County.

He started the season on the right hand side of midfield but he suffered a knee injury in the championship opener against Wolverhampton Wanders that ruled him out for two months.

Following his return to the side, he enjoyed a good spell in front of goal scoring four times in eight games before the New Year.

He was a regular in the Leeds side in the second half of last season, earning him a place in Republic of Ireland side for their crucial World Cup qualifiers against Sweden and Austria in March.

Green started all five games for McDermott following his arrival in April in his current holding role.
