LUFC On This Day - July 10th
A look back at what happened on this day in the recent history of Leeds United on July 10th.
1927 - Don Revie
The Leeds United takeover saga looks unlikely to be sorted anytime soon as KPMG have announced they will be taking their time to assess the bids that have been made by prospective new owners for the club.
With the deadline coming at 5pm yesterday (Monday) evening, it now appears that anything up to 4 consortia may have expressed a firm interest in taking over a club that looked set to be re-acquired by former chairman Ken Bates until opposition arose from HM Revenue & Customs.
BBC online are now claiming that 2 out of the 4 interested parties have in fact joined forces, with Simon Franks, chairman of Redbus Investments and Simon Morris, the creator of 'saveleeds.com` now apparently tabling a joint bid which must surely be the best option for the club.
Jonathan Douglas leaves Leeds after failing to agree a new deal with the club. Douglas joins fellow League One side Swindon Town.
Ken Bates is far from happy after a Premiership club has snapped up another one of Leeds academy players.
16-year-old Luke Garbutt joined Everton this week despite being offered the chance of a scholarship and professional contract at Elland Road.
Speaking on Yorkshire Radio Bates said, 'We're chasing matter with the Football League and the Premier League and we're seeking substantial compensation.'
The worst kept secret in football finally seems to be reaching an end with goalkeeper Paddy Kenny signing for Leeds United.
Kenny has worked with manager Neil Warnock previously at Bury, Sheffield United and Queens Park Rangers and he has been linked with a move to Elland Road since the end of last season.
His current club Queens Park Rangers have signed Robert Green as a replacement for Kenny, who was told by Rangers boss Mark Hughes he was free to look for a new club.
The two clubs have reportedly agreed a fee for Kenny and he is expected to be announced on Wednesday.
Portsmouth striker Luke Varney says he is looking forward to a move to Leeds.
The 29 year old has been linked with a number of other championship clubs since the end of last season but he admits he wants to be part of Neil Warnock`s side as the Leeds boss chases a record-breaking eighth promotion. Speaking in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Varney said, 'The other clubs that have been mentioned are still Championship clubs. But they are not clubs of the size of Leeds.
'Neil`s got a great record in the Championship and it`s something I want to be a part of. With coming to Leeds, I can also still get home to see my little child in Leicester and it would be perfect. I`m looking forward to a move to Leeds.'
Varney only signed for Portsmouth last summer on a three-year deal from Derby County but the cash strapped south coast club are desperate to offload most of the current first team squad.
Leeds have already signed Jason Pearce from Portsmouth this summer and also held negotiations with Joel Ward before he decided to join Crystal Palace.
David Norris is also reportedly a target for Leeds but they face competition from Sheffield Wednesday who have reportedly spoken to the midfielder.
Both Varney and Norris trained with Portsmouth on Monday as the League One side returned for pre-season training.
