LUFC On This Day - July 5th

A look back at what happened on this day July 5th in the history of Leeds United.

Leeds have never played a game on this day in their history, so today we look back in the Vital Leeds archives of the last few years to see what was being reported.

Following the announcement that HM Revenue & Customs are set to challenge Ken Bates' offer to re-acquire the club, Leeds United have hit back in a bid to ensure the clubs survival.

It was announced on Tuesday that the Inland Revenue intend to challenge the CVA offer, which 'New Leeds' head Ken Bates had increased from 1p in the £1 to 8p.

Following the announcement, Bates claimed that if the Government organisation continues with their challenge, it could see the club forced into liquidation. Before the CVA deadline, Bates told The Times:
'If there is a legal challenge, it could take two or three months to get to court and be decided,' Bates told the Times, prior to the announcement on Tuesday.

'In the meantime, who is going to pay to run the club?

'So far it's been funded by the 'new Leeds', but if there is a challenge, the 'new Leeds' won't do it because it's a risk.

'The implications are that the club would close down.'

The club have now talked to their lawyers, to investigate the Inland Revenue`s case against Leeds, citing a test case that was defeated when HMRC challenged Newcastle United for VAT charged by football agents.

A preliminary High Court meeting is set to be held on Friday.

Leeds United manager Simon Grayson says that Max Gradel is still very much part of his plans despite starting the season in the stands.

Gradel will miss the first four games of the new Championship season after being sent off in the first half of the last game of the season against Bristol Rovers.

The midfielder picked up an automatic three-match ban for violent conduct after stamping on a Rovers defender and picked up an extra game ban from the FA after refusing to leave the pitch.

Jermaine Beckford and Mike Doyle had to manhandle Gradel off the pitch after his dismissal to stop him getting at referee Graham Salisbury.

Speaking on Radio Leeds, Grayson said, 'He's going to suffer by having a four game ban and he's been fined by the club.
'He knows he's let himself down, me down and the fans down.'

Leeds United have added an overseas game to their pre-season schedule.

Leeds will travel to Norway to face Sandefjord on Tuesday July 26th.

The Norwegian league is currently in full flow with Sandefjord playing in the second tier.

It will be the second pre-season in a row that Leeds have visited Norway. Last summer they played SK Brann after their original game against SK Lyn Oslo was cancelled due to the club going bankrupt.

The game completes their pre-season schedule that starts a week on Wednesday in Scotland against Falkirk.

Leeds United striker Davide Somma is not expected to be back before the start of the season.

Somma hasn`t played since suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in pre-season training last summer.

The South African international returned to training at the turn of the year but suffered a reoccurrence of the injury that has ruled him out ever since.

Speaking on the official website, Leeds boss Neil Warnock said, 'I cannot see Davide being available until September or October. I can`t see him starting anything until the end of August.'
