McDermott - I've signed best player in League One

Leeds United boss Brian McDermott feels he has signed last season`s best player in League One after winning the race to sign Luke Murphy from Crewe Alexandra.

McDermott beat off competition from fellow championship side Blackburn Rovers and relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers to capture the 23-year-old and the Leeds boss says he is delighted to have signed the midfielder on a three-year deal.

Speaking on the official website , McDermott said, 'Myself, the owners, the staff, the players, and I'm sure and I can speak for the supporters on this one, are absolutely delighted to sign Luke.

'He's a player I've known for a long time, I've watched his career progress, and I feel he was the best player in his division last year.

'Luke certainly fits the profile of player that we're looking to attract: He is young, hungry, wants to work hard and very obviously talented.
'I'd like to thank the owners for making this deal happen. We had spoken about Luke earlier in the summer being one for the key signings we're looking to make.'

Murphy captained Crewe to the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy last season, scoring the opener in the final against Southend United as they went on to win 2-0.

He was named in the PFA League One Team of the Year and he also won the Crewe Alexandra Player of the season as he scored 9 goals in 48 appearances and he was also responsible for 12 assists to goals.

The midfielder is a product of the Crewe academy production line that continues to unearth football talent. He has made 186 appearances for the club since making his debut shortly after his 18th birthday in 2008 and he has netted on 25 occasions.

Murphy is Leeds second signing of the summer, following striker Matt Smith arriving from Oldham Athletic.
