LUFC On This Day - July 1st

A look back at what happened on this day July 1st in the history of Leeds United.

Leeds have never played a game on this day in their history, so today we look back in the Vital Leeds archives of the last few years to see what was being reported.

2007

With the club in administration, Ken Bates is waiting for any objections before his takeover of the club can be completed on July 3rd.

2009
Leeds terminates the contract of Peter Sweeney by mutual consent despite still having twelve months remaining on his current contract.

Sweeney made just nine appearances for Leeds in eighteen months at Elland Road.

2010
Leeds players return to training as they prepare for life back in the championship.

Amongst the first team squad returning to training were the four new recruits during the summer. Kasper Schmeichel, Billy Paynter, Federico Bessone and Paul Connolly all meeting their new teammates at Thorpe Arch.

Midfielder Robert Snodgrass is looking forward to the new season and he feels Leeds could make it back-to-back promotions. Snodgrass saying at the time, 'You have to realise you are playing for a big club and realise what a great chance this is to take this club up to the Premiership.'

Leeds boss Simon Grayson is being linked with the vacant job at Leicester City. Grayson is quick to quash the rumours when he said, 'I've just got a team into the Championship and it's the football club who I support. I've got a job to do here.

'I'm flattered by the speculation but I'm certainly committed to being at Leeds United for a lot longer than this.'

Having already brought in four players to the squad Grayson says there is little money to spend, 'There`s a little bit to spend but there are not major funds available.'

The pre-season friendly with SK Lyn Oslo in Norway on July 27th is cancelled with the Norwegian side in major financial difficulty.

2011

Leeds are reportedly ready to offer Robert Snodgrass a new deal having already turned down a bid from Norwich City (not much changes in twelve months).

Crystal Palace are reported to be chasing Leeds United defender Patrick Kisnorbo who is out of contract at Elland Road according to Sky Sports.

Bradley Johnson is a free agent after running down his contract at Elland Road and he quickly signs for Premier League new boys Norwich City on a three-year deal.

Neil Kilkenny is also a free agent as of today after also seeing his contract come to an end.

There are plenty of rumours surrounding the future of the clubs player of the season Max Gradel with West Ham reportedly leading the chase for the winger. Simon Grayson says the club have received no offers for Gradel, when he said, 'Unfortunately you can't stop speculation. It shows the calibre of players we have, but there's been no written offers for Max.
'If someone offers mega money for a player you always have to weigh up if it's for the best, but we don't have to sell.
'With any deals we do, either in or out, we will do them as quietly as possible.'
