LUFC McDermott - Byram better off at Leeds

LUFC McDermott - Byram better off at Leeds

Leeds United boss Brian McDermott says much sought after defender Sam Byram would be better off remaining at Elland Road where he will get regular games.

The 19-year-old starlet sprung to prominence last season after impressing in pre-season.

Byram took his opportunity in the first game of the season against Shrewsbury Town in the League Cup after an injury to Tom Lees and the youngster never looked back.

The versatile youngster, who can play in midfield as well as at right full back is being linked with a number of high profile Premier League clubs this summer.

Arsenal, Everton, Liverpool and Manchester City have all been reported as showing an interest in Byram but with first team opportunities less likely with a move to a top Premier League club, McDermott says he would be better off developing his game at Elland Road, helping the club return to the Premier League.

Speaking on Talksport, McDermott said, "He`s right up there, he`s got some real composure and he`s a great lad.

""He has the mentality to go as far as he wants to go. Sam needs to be playing games for us and developing his career with us in my opinion,"

"It`s happened in the past when young lads have moved too early to big clubs and never get an opportunity to play.
"He played 44 games in the league for us last year, so I think the more games and experience he can get at our level and a club as big as ours then the better it is for us too.

"I think it`s his ultimate ambition to be a Premier League player with Leeds United."

Byram walked away with all the main awards at the end of season awards dinner at Leeds and his form earned him a call-up to the England under-20 squad for this summer`s World Cup finals in Turkey.

Unfortunately, a hip injury that forced him to miss the final two weeks of the league season reoccurred and he was forced out of the squad on the eve of the competition.

Byram is a product of the Leeds United academy and after seeing the club sell most of its star players in the past few years, it would be nice to hang on to one of the hottest properties outside of the Premier League.

Unfortunately, with Leeds financial predicament being well publicised in the past few weeks, with McDermott admitting he needs to sell to bring players in, the resolve of the club will be severely tested if a bid comes in for the player.
