LUFC McDermott - Players in great shape

Leeds United boss Brian McDermott says the players have returned in great shape as they start their preparations for the new season.

The players returned to Thorp Arch today for the start of pre-season training after enjoying their summer breaks and McDermott was full of praise for the players professionalism during their break, especially that of striker Ross McCormack.

Speaking on the official website , McDermott said, 'I have great staff who can prepare the players to the peak of their capacity,' said the manager.

'I saw Ross McCormack on Wednesday and he looks fantastic. He's worked really hard this summer, and a lot of them have come back in fantastic shape.'

New signing Matt Smith joined up with the squad for the first time since his move from Oldham Athletic earlier this month whilst only Sam Byram and Tom Lees were missing.

Byram was missing due to the hip injury that forced him to miss this summer`s under-20 World Cup finals with England.

Last season`s player of the year, who was forced to miss the last two games of last season with the injury suffered a re-occurrence whilst training with England ahead of the tournament.

Lees is enjoying his summer break after representing the England under-21 squad during this summer`s European Championship finals.

The defender played in England`s final group game after the side crashed out at the group stage losing all three of their games.

The players will remain at Thorp Arch for the next week and prepare for their first pre-season friendly of the summer at Farsley Celtic on July 6th.

The squad will then leave for Slovenia where they will play three games during a ten-day training camp.
