LUFC Leeds United transfer rumours - Week Six

We are now just two weeks away from the squad returning for pre-season training and Brian McDermott has finally made his first signing for the club.

24-year-old striker Matt Smith has joined on a free transfer from Oldham Athletic. The signing was announced on Monday and it came unexpectedly to many with Smith never linked with a move to Elland Road in the national press.

The Leeds rumour site, which is usually about as reliable as a chocolate teapot actually came up with the link between Leeds and the player on the Saturday prior to him signing.

One poster posted:

'I know people at OAFC and have been told that Matt Smith (striker) is certain to sign for Leeds this week. I asked how he rates Smith and he said at the moment he's premier league in the air but league 2 on the ground but is vastly improving.`

Law of averages, they would get one right sooner or later.

New names have been scarce this week with only two new names added to the list.

Two of the red tops linked Celtic striker Anthony Stokes with a move to Leeds in midweek.

The 24-year-old has twelve months remaining on his current deal at Parkhead and the papers said that Leeds would target Stokes if they missed out on Wolves striker Kevin Doyle, who is also a target for Celtic. Stokes made 23 appearances last season, scoring 7 goals.

Peterborough chairman Barry Fry says Leeds boss Brian McDermott has approached them regarding Tommy Rowe.

The 24-year-old winger is going into the final twelve months of his current deal at London Road and he has turned down the offer of a new deal from the club.

It is reported that Rowe would like to return north and he is keen on a move to Leeds.

Of those already linked with Leeds. It now seems just a matter of time before Reading striker Noel Hunt completes his move to Elland Road.

Brian McDermott is a guest at the wedding of Hunt shortly and maybe he will get him to sign his Leeds contract at the same time as his marriage certificate.

Noel`s brother Stephen also continues to be linked with a move to Leeds.

Matthew Upson has again been linked with a move to Leeds with Brighton and Leicester also chasing the former England international.

It seems that nobody wants any of our squad as another week goes by without anyone being linked with a move away from Elland Road.

All the rumours that I put up have been in the national press, local press or websites such as Skysports.com, Clubcall.com, and Teamtalk.com amongst others and not from sites where people just put up their wish list and make out that they have inside knowledge through their best mate`s uncle`s brother.

If you see or read any links with Leeds United then please let us know on here or on the forum.

I'm hearing that Rotherham's Ben Pringle is being linked with Leeds again - as well as other teams.
