LUFC On This Day - 16th June
A look back at what happened on this day June 16th in the history of Leeds United.
Leeds have never played a game on this day in their history, so today we look back in the Vital Leeds archives of the last few years to see what was being reported.
Tranmere Rovers boss Ronnie Moore has spoken of his delight at facing recently relegated Leeds United on the opening day of the 2007/08 League One season. When the season kicks off August 11th, Leeds will make the journey across the Pennines to Merseyside where they will face Rovers for the first time ever in league competition.
It`s been 7 years since Leeds and Tranmere have met in a game of football; two Darren Huckerby goals were not enough to see Leeds through to the next round of the League Cup as The Whites went down 3-2 in extra time.
'What a fantastic start to the season,' said a delighted Moore. 'You couldn't ask for better.
'We should get a good crowd and the thought of the mighty Leeds coming to Prenton Park will get everyone excited.'
Leeds United midfielder Shaun Derry has admitted that he is glad to be reaching the end of his recovery from a lengthy injury that saw him play just one game so far for the club in 2007.
The vice-captain picked up a heel injury that has kept him out of action for the last 6 months, and following two operations has now finally had the cast removed in time hopefully to join up with the rest of the squad for a spot of pre-season training, though the player is remaining realistic about his recovery:
'I'll follow what the specialist tells me,' he explained. 'I'm not setting any targets because that only breeds disappointment if you don't reach them' Derry told the official website.
'I'm going to get my body right and come back stronger than ever before…
'…I've seen players rush back and pick up something else. I don't want to make that mistake. I want to make sure I'm fit, strong and the player I can be.'
The fixtures for the 2008/09 season are out and Leeds will make the trip to Scunthorpe United on the opening day of the season.
Leeds United`s pre-season trip to Darlington has been cancelled after the pair were drawn against each other in the Carling Cup today.
Leeds were due to visit Darlington on July 21st, they already have another fixture on that date away at Wealdstone.
Frazer Richardson will be released by Leeds United when his contract expires on June 30th.
Leeds United have made their first signing of the summer. Jason Crowe who`s contract at Northampton On June 30th has agreed to join the club on July 1st.
Leeds have been drawn against Lincoln City in the first round of the Carling Cup with the tie to take place at Elland Road.
Leeds United have made their fourth signing of the summer with the capture of Federico Bessone from Swansea City.
Leeds United have been given a West Yorkshire derby in the first round of the Carling Cup.
Bradford City will visit Elland Road in the week commencing 8th August.
Leeds United youngster Charlie Taylor has won the LFE 2010/11 Goal of the season for his goal against Newcastle United in April.
The goal was on a short list of six from previous goal of the month winners from football across Youth Alliance and Academy leagues.
Taylor pulled clear to win by 559 votes with a little help from Vital Leeds, after we published an article over the weekend asking for support from Leeds fans with the poll very close at the time.
The defender had already picked up the goal of the month for April after his superb strike in the 6-3 win over Newcastle.
