LUFC McDermott - Byram wants to stay

LUFC McDermott - Byram wants to stay

Leeds United boss Brian McDermott says Sam Byram wants to remain with Leeds next season.

The 19-year-old enjoyed an exceptional first season in the Leeds first team and he walked away with all the main awards at the end of season awards dinner.

His form for Leeds has seen him linked with a number of Premier League clubs already but McDermott says that both the player and the club want him to be at Elland Road next season. "Sam wants to be here next season and the club want him to be here next season. I`m absolutely certain of that. If someone does try to push him in a different direction then it won`t be the player or the club who are doing the pushing. I`m not concerned about it," McDermott told the Yorkshire Evening Post.

"For me his development as a player will be so much better and quicker through regular football, and the games he`s had at Leeds have done him the power of good. You can see that he`s loving it and I feel very strongly that he`s in the right place. I know he thinks so too. Why would he want to go anywhere else?"

The defender burst onto the scene last summer after taking his chance during pre-season and impressing in the three game tour of Devon and Cornwall.

Manager Neil Warnock admitted in the week leading up to the season that he still did not expect to play the youngster during the season but was looking for a loan period away from Elland Road.

An injury to Tom Lees on the eve of the first game of the season against Shrewsbury Town forced a rethink from Warnock and Byram took his chance.

He quickly endeared himself to the Leeds faithful and his first goal for the club against Oxford United in the first month of the season, showed the confidence and talent he possessed. The goal making the shortlist for the Football League goal of 2012.

The club academy product played in Leeds first 53 games of the season before suffering a hip injury in the warm up for the penultimate game of the season against Brighton and Hove Albion.

His form has already seen clubs like Manchester City, Liverpool and Everton linked with his signature this summer.

Byram is currently in the provisional 35-man England squad named by Peter Taylor for the under-20 World Cup in Turkey later this summer. The young defender will find out on June 7th whether he will have made the final 23-man squad.

Play-Off Hopes Ended Despite Thrilling Fightback

Leeds United saw their play-off hopes all but ended despite an enthralling fightback against Norwich City on Saturday.

Leeds trailed 3-0 but fought back to earn a point in a 3-3 draw but they are now three points behind Fulham with just one game remaining, with Fulham having a far superior goal difference.

Leeds have conceded just 13 goals at Elland Road all season but Norwich picked their way through the Leeds defence at ease to go into a three-goal lead.
