LUFC Byram - It is a great opportunity for academy

Leeds United starlet Sam Byram is predicting a big future for the youngsters at the club.

The 19-year-old academy product has been a revelation this season after impressing in pre-season and he recently won all the top accolades at the end of season awards dinner.

Fellow youngsters Dominic Poleon and Chris Dawson have also been in and around the first team this season and after the success of the youth team this season, Byram believes under new boss Brian McDermott, the youngsters at the club have a great opportunity at the club.

Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Byram said, "They won the league with three games to go and the potential that is there is big.

"I think we have got the right manager to bring them through. He goes and watches their games, he interacts with the young players and it brings everyone together.

"Having Neil Redfearn training with us and looking after the youth team, it is the best opportunity the academy players have ever had."

The youth team wrapped up the league title with an emphatic 7-2 win at Nottingham Forest at the end of March, with three games remaining after losing just one of their first sixteen games.

They were unlucky losers at the fifth round stage of the FA Youth Cup when they lost to Liverpool at Anfield.

Leeds were quick to sign the five youngsters who were second year scholars at the club on long-term professional contracts.

The youth team play Queens Park Rangers in the semi-final of the play-offs at Thorpe Arch on Saturday, as the winners and runners-up of the North and South League Division 2, battle it out to find the outright winners.

Southern champions Charlton Athletic meet Huddersfield Town in the other semi-final.
