LUFC Varney wants to use cup as a springboard

Luke Varney is hoping to use the recent cup games against Birmingham City and Tottenham Hotspur as a springboard after a difficult first half of the season at Elland Road.

Varney joined in the summer from Portsmouth and he has found himself under criticism from sections of the Elland Road crowd, but after good performances in the cup, he now hopes to use the confidence gained from his two performances in the cup.

Speaking on LUTV, Varney said, "I felt really good after the Birmingham game after getting in the side and being involved in a good win away from home

"The Birmingham game was a springboard and I went into the Tottenham game with a lot of confidence."

Varney has probably saved his best performances of the season for the cup competitions. He scored his first goal for the club in the season opener against Shrewsbury Town in the League Cup and he also produced a man of the match performance in the 3-0 win over Southampton, despite a miss of the season contender.

He helped Leeds win their FA Cup replay at Birmingham to set up a fourth round clash with Tottenham Hotspur. He set Leeds on their way in the 2-1 win over Tottenham last weekend when he cut in to put Leeds ahead and score his second goal of the season.

Varney will now hope to retain his place in the side for today`s clash with league leaders Cardiff City.
