LUFC Varney - We set out to be positive

Leeds United goal scoring hero Luke Varney says the side set out to be positive against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup as they overcame the Premier League side to book their place in the next round.

Varney set Leeds on their way with the opening goal of the game when he got in behind the Tottenham defence before giving Brad Friedel no chance.

Leeds never gave Tottenham time to settle on the ball, chasing and harrying from the start with the visitors having few clear-cut chances.

Varney says Leeds boss Neil Warnock has been telling the players this week to go into the tie positive and his words paid off in the 2-1 win with Ross McCormack also scoring for Leeds.

Speaking on ESPN, Varney said, "We knew it was going to be a tough test. Everyone is aware of their quality and pace but we set out all week to be positive.

"The gaffer installed it into us from Monday. We are all delighted. The lads grafted and we hung on in the end."

Varney was making only his second start for Leeds since being sent off against Millwall in November.
